We are interested in refining, refreshing, and perhaps extending our logo. We're not starting from scratch. Our existing style guide can be accessed here: https://www.discovery.org/m/2018/03…eguide.pdf. The vector can be downloaded here: https://www.discovery.org/m/2020/02/di-logo.zip. The original logotype is based on freely available fonts Queens Park or TeX Gyre Pagella.
The typeface and primary color should *probably* persist. Leading and kerning are open to revision, including solving some of the kerning issues with ligatures.
We're looking to introduce themes of discovery and/or navigation. Discovery is named after the HMS Discovery which sailed in 1789. So nautical themes could work, but also tying into modern explorations in space could be apropos. Another angle is worldviews. The O in Discovery, for example, could be a microscope or a telescope or porthole. And finally, one of the underlying themes in our programs is that humans are not just matter, but also mind. This abstract concept, however, may be difficult to visualize.
One possibility is introducing graphics/icons into the existing letterforms, like a sail into the D or a compass or planet into the O (just as examples). We're also open to adding a logo to the existing logotype.
