Il brief di design
Hairys is a digital learning resource that supports the development of character education, viewed through the lens of Positive Psychology as developed by the likes of Martin Seligman, Carol Dweck and Lea Waters. Hairys supports the development of skills, like Mindfulness, Emotional Regulation and Impulse Control, and the development of conceptual understandings including 'Growth Mindset', basic (kid friendly) neuroscience and 'Character Strengths'. This is done through a series of audio files, animations and offline activities in classrooms, living rooms or any other contexts where kids get to interact with strong role models. Our core target audience is kids aged 7 - 11 years old though we do work with students as young as 5 and 12 years and older. We hope to help kids recognise everyone has different emotional responses to different stimuli, that the emotions they feel are neither inherently positive nor negative but rather it's the actions they take, whilst experiencing these emotions that can be. We help the kids to view emotions as evolutionarily formed mental functions with the purpose of protecting us. We intend to develop kids' ability to appreciate and utilise a range of scientifically validated strategies, tools and concepts to help them regulate their responses to strong emotions.
Qual è la tua visione?
A Hairy - a monstrous, mythical Australian creature also known as a Yowie, Bunyip or Hairy-man. A Hairy is typically an ugly creature covered in coarse hair that is rarely seen as it hides in dark and murky places like caves and water-holes in remote or mountainous regions of the country. It is an Australian equivalent to the bigfoot, sasquatch or yeti. We are looking for a 'cute' / ugly yet interesting, child-friendly version of this mythical creature which is transformed into five other forms of itself when it is overcome by strong emotions whilst travelling through their corresponding 'lands'. These strong emotions include sadness, anger, fear, disgust and enjoyment; as presented in Paul Ekman's 'Atlas of Emotions' (http://www.paulekman.com/atlas-of-emotions/#continents:anger). The colours in this tool may prove useful guides for a colour palette. Please avoid making these characters look too similar to the characters in Pixar's 'Inside Out'. The hairy's base form is intended to represent a mind that is in balance or a state of calm whilst each of the others represents that mind moving towards a more intense and unbalanced state e.g. fury (anger), apprehension or terror (fear), sourness or loathing (disgust), dysphoria or anguish (sadness) and elation or manic ecstasy (enjoyment). Whilst the hairy's base form is rotund, furry, potentially huggable and has the allusion to or an actual set of small horns / teeth, each of its other states' appearances accentuates one or more of these features to emphasise the change in state-of-mind (e.g. larger or smaller horns, more or less hair etc). As it is a child centred avatar, it should be inherently gender neutral and it's 'ugliness' may be represented by humorous features like a hairless bottom on its otherwise hairy body. We hope to use the Hairy, and it's emotional alter-egos, as characters in simple animations, graphics in a website, and eventually possible written texts, soft toys and so forth. As such, it would be preferable to have a front, back and side view of each state that can be used as a sprite in animation software. Ideally, each view would also have the sprites' appendages as separate layers that can be more easily manipulated with this software. Values to Communicate: patience, self-regulation, empathy / compassion, respect, kindness, responsibility, resilience, perseverance Colours: shades similar to those used to represent the different continents found here: http://www.paulekman.com/atlas-of-emotions/#
