Design app icon for an audio time stretching app very popular with musicians

We make music and audio apps for Android and iOS. Generally musicians are our largest audience.

We would like our Music Speed Changer app for Android and soon iOS to have a new app icon. The previous one was designed in 2016 and the design styling is somewhat dated. The new one should be similar to the old one with similar colors to match the app (see screenshots) and to be familiar to existing users but with modern design ideas. As the app is primarily an audio time stretching app that slows or speeds up music and audio, the 2-3 layered play icons are the central theme. We have used the 2 layered in the Android app and the 3 layered icons in other places. We want to stick with a multiple play icon idea, and are open to reimagining of this concept. It's a possibility that all the play icons are the same size, or that they are similar to how they currently are - different sizes. It's important that the design conveys changing the audio playback speed. One problem we have with the existing “2_play_icon” design is the lack of contrast between the background and the foreground blue color. A possibility is for the background to have a gradient, this seems to be popular these days. Another point I should mention is that freeform icons are no longer a thing, the icons should be presented as squircles or rounded square (the final deliverable will be with a square as the platforms apply their own rounding of the corners).
