Section 1- Why? The World is Changing. Quickly. The average lifespan of a S&P 500 company has decreased from: 67 years (1920’s) to 15 years (today) The time to for a company to grow from an idea to a billionaire dollar valuation has gone from over a decade to less than a year The cost of starting a company has dropped significantly, allowing entrepreneurs to use powerful tools to build solutions which can impact millions of people The Veterinary Profession isn’t immune to these changes Instant Access to Information- 67% of vets said their clients use the internet to look up pet health information and New Sources of Pet Data- Moving from 9B connected devices to 50B by 2020 bringing new opportunities to understand the health of our pets Alternative Models of Care- The launch of over 10 on-demand pet care businesses within the last 3 years Our goal with the VSIP program, can we facilitate opportunities for the veterinary profession to co-create our future. Section 2- What We Did? Over the course of the summer of 2016, the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M ran an experiment that brought together faculty, students, alumni, practitioners, early-stage startup companies, and stakeholders. Startups + Students + Veterinary Stakeholders → Working Together to Transform Our Partners (Include logos) were tackling on areas of rapid growth and massive opportunity in animal health Telemedicine Genomics Point of Care Diagnostics Wearables Student supported the development of the technology, business model, and practice relationships while learning about principles of entrepreneurship as they acted as the veterinary “voice” and provided the on the ground perspective to companies Veterinary Stakeholders gained access and exposure to an exciting set of emerging veterinary solution and the opportunity to shape their development. Section 3- Key Outcomes 100% of students want to participate again, 100% of partners want ongoing engagement, 60% increase in student knowledge/skills needed for a startup, 35% increase in student confidence, 4 students in negotiation for ongoing work with partners, touched 40 practices. “[The program] not only gave me the tools and experiences to see this profession in a new and imaginative light, but also encouraged me to change the status quo for the sake of our patients, clients, and fellow employees.” “The other students and I have learned business principles, built a network, and further developed our knowledge and experience of what veterinary medicine means." “VSIP has exposed me to a coming world of digital innovations that will transform the veterinary field.” “As a partner company aiming to enter the veterinary market with little experience, the VSIP program provided us with access & expertise that directly informed our go-to-market strategy. The work we did with this summer played an integral role in our central decision making process, which would not have been possible without the VSIP program.” “Working with the Student Innovation Program and Adam, Aaron and Caitlin has really helped Voyce be top of mind within TAMU CVM’s clinics, and having a student to dig deep into our technology, by learning it, using it and communicating it to other students and faculty has given us great insights that we couldn’t have had otherwise.” Section 4- What’s Next?- see google link for proper layout Creation of Veterinary Entrepreneurship Curriculum Expansion of Summer Program Opportunities Launch of Veterinary Innovation Lab Events Faculty Training Programs Establishment of Early Adopter Practice Network Expand training opportunities to multiple institutions and pilot full curriculum this Fall in partnership with “The Idea”- Veterinary Innovation Competition Target 10 startup partners and pair students from multiple institutions with companies in summer 2017 Launch incubator program for 2+ veterinary student-led startups Collision space for faculty, students, partners, alumni to encounter new technology companies and trends April 7-9: Aggies Invent 48hr Rapid Prototype Competition in partnership with the College of Engineering April 28-30: Veterinary Innovation Forum in partnership with NAVC Creation of a faculty innovation certification program Target of 10 faculty members from 3+ institutions Develop a network of 25+ practices to help accelerate novel concepts and technologies Launch of case studies
