The goal of Bonding over Basketball is to facilitate cross-cultural dialogue through the “ice-breaking” starting point of shared appreciation of the game of basketball.
In today’s social and political environment, cultural, racial, and religious tensions are high. Constructive dialogues among people with different perspectives are rare. Without pre-existing, friendly relationships with individuals of contrasting views, no one knows how to reach out and get a conversation started.
There is no better way for any two people to have a comfortable, easy chat than by taking in a professional or college basketball game together. The live basketball environment puts everyone at ease and is conducive to casual, friendly conversations. Imagine some combinations of people taking in a game together: police officers and residents of an urban neighborhood; Palestinians and pro-Israel American Jews; Muslims and non-Muslims; LGBT and straight; black, hispanic, and white.
The idea is that enjoying one more basketball games together could be the beginning of dialogues and relationships that have longlasting, valuable results for a broad community. There will be either formal or informal follow-up gatherings among participants of the Bonding over Basketball program in order to achieve and document tangible results.
