TANSTAAFL has two important connotations, and they are connected.
First, it is a core concept of markets/economics/life. There is a cost for everything, even when you can’t see it. Life is actually a massive set of tradeoffs and opportunity costs. Every decision (even when you refuse to make a decision) means that you have paid something (at least your time, the most valuable resource of all) to obtain something else. And when something looks free, it just means the cost is being hidden from you.
Second, the actual all-caps acronym TANSTAAFL (but not the concept) belongs to Robert Heinlein, arguably the greatest sci-fi author in history and was introduced in one of the greatest sci-books, ever, “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.” It is a core tenant of those sometimes called “rational anarchists.” So it combines a rejection of authority with putting the highest possible value on freedom.
Finally, worth noting that our music is a mix of classic-rock, funk, jazz, mixed with EDM. And I’m an old guy making music invented by 20 year olds, but using my generation’s musical soul.
