Design & Construction

We are a couple who have begun our landscape design and construction company. This endeavour is a culmination of many years of passion and hard work for a trade we take a lot of pride in. As we put the final touches together for our business, we still find ourselves missing a crucial element; the logo.

The name of our company is Heart & Grit Landscaping. The name is significant because we are both workers who started as labour and grew into where we are now. Chelsea is a brilliant Horticulturalist, plant mama and designer who brings empathy and understanding to provide exactly what clients want for their projects. Myself, I am a stoneworker/ construction foreman who fell into this line of work as a student job and then became absolutely enthralled with the work and decided to make it my career. Together, we want to provide a service that surpasses the quality of the other companies around us. This means all elements of exterior construction design and implementation (walls, pools, patios, decks) and plant design and implementation. We have come to know our work inside and out, are passionate about it to no end and we truly just want to be proud of every day of work we put in.

We are hoping for the logo to be an image with text included, "Heart & Grit Landscaping", with the thought it will be on the side of our truck or an article of clothing. We have attached a drawing of a raw concept we had in mind, of two hands, one male and one female holding a plant and a hammer respectively. This was an intentional choice, because it is so often imposed that it is the "boys" taking on the construction work in our field. If we were to go ahead with something similar, we would love for the gender roles to be "reversed" as there are many days on our sites that will reflect this. What we love about this concept are a few things: the representation of workers hands, the symbolism of the variety of materials we use (plants, mallets, shovels) and the subtlety of the heart imagery between what is held by the two hands.

We hope our blueprint is inspirational for artists out there, We would love to see your spin on it. Currently, what we have just seems a little lackluster in terms of details, we feel lines could be cleaner and that it is a little crowded for a logo. That being said, we appreciate the overall setup of the hands as they seem to be working hand in hand, in harmony somewhat. Of course you are the experts and we are eager to see what alternatives or changes you come up with

We have an initial concept of our logo below, which we are looking to refine to be more serious, as we do work with higher end clients. We would like to see a mallet or hammer for the tool, and lavender (first choice), or peony for the flower- we really did not like the vine or thorn-like appearance. The Circle was not a necessity either, but if it fits your interpretation of our logo, by all means, include it.
