The TIER (Technology and Infrastructure for Emerging Regions) group is a research group at the University of California, Berkeley focused on the development of new technologies for under-served populations throughout the world.
The aim of the TIER project is to address the challenges in bringing the Information Technology revolution to the masses of the developing regions of the world. Historically, most projects that aim to do this rely on technology that was developed for the affluent world, but these imported technologies fail to address key challenges in cost, deployment, power consumption, and support for semi- and illiterate users. Some example technologies include long-distance wifi, capable of over 10mbps across hundreds of kilometers, and software suites that allow for multiple users to share existing educational games.
Dicci qualcosa su di te e sulle persone che vuoi raggiungere
Our audience is broad, encompassing both the academic and industrial spheres. As the logo will be used in both the physical and cyber worlds, it should be inviting to students passing by our space as well as parties deeply interested in international development.
In essence, our audience is anyone potentially interested in the role technology can have on international development. We seek to invite participation from all interested parties, across the university and the world.
We are currently reorganizing the research group to attract new students and donors. Towards this end, we request designers submit possible logos for use on our newly designed website (currently located here: http://tier.airjaldi.net/) as well as on swag and our physical research space at CITRIS (http://www.citris-uc.org/).
The logo should not be overly large, and must be approximately square, as to allow it on both the website and swag. It must also integrate well with the overall UC Berkeley style guidelines (http://identity.berkeley.edu/guidelines/), as that is the color scheme we are using for the new website.
Lastly, our goals are to change the world using technology. The logo should personify this in some regard, signalling these broad aims of the TIER project if at all possible. However, the group is large, and any logos using specific TIER projects must take into account this diversity of ideas.
