Once I knew I was going to design a packaging line for candy products, I knew I was in for some fun design opportunities. I wanted the quality of the packages to match the experience of eating candy from a different culture. While other countries have similarities between how they’re run, how people act and celebrate, and what they enjoy doing for fun, there are so many diverse concepts that can be applied to branding when appropriate. Including various elements of the rich cultural background in Japan helped me to understand that the roots of anything are oftentimes the most beautiful. Granted, there are brands that are beautiful just for the sake of being beautiful and colorful, and that can be among the best solutions for a design. In the case of the packages I designed, the directions were too rich to just settle with simplicity.
