Wine Label Redesign - Reinvigorate Bulgarian Brand BERGULÉ

Villa Melnik Winery is a small family-owned winery located in south-western Bulgaria. We produce high quality wines from indigenous and international varieties. Our winery and the surrounding vineyards are situated on the sunny sandstone hills around the town of Melnik, which is famous for its “sand pyramids”- sandstone formations shaped by erosion that make very typical shapes (photo uploaded). We have a modern winery that attracts visitors every day. We store our barrels and bottles in tunnels dug by hand into the sandy hill. We have three classes of wine (three brands), and Bergule is the middle (premium) class. We have various reds, whites, and one rose from the Bergule range, so keep that in mind when coming up with the color schemes. The Bergule (premium range) are single varietals or blends, which have 3 to 9 mths in oak – so a good balance of freshness, fruitiness, and some complexity from the barrels. The Villa Melnik winery coat of arms is on all of the labels. The target market are 30+ who are ready to spend a bit more money on high quality wine (although this wine is not too expensive and is not our most expensive one).

Bergule has been on the market since 2010 with this current label, so customers know it, and we don’t want to make it drastically different, but we do want to significantly improve it. Our problem is that the current label is not interesting enough, and it does not have a great stand-out on the shelves (the name does not stand out well enough on the pale label, and the bright colors make it a bit candy-like = not good). My idea is to play a bit with the fonts and the type of paper to achieve an eye-catching and unique effect. The coat of arms should still be there, but it could become much more subtle and well integrated into the label. I’m looking for something harmonious, clean, simple but classy, nothing too pretentious, but a label that you would love to pick up as a present and would love to get served in a nice restaurant. I’d love to see a beautifully crafted name or simple lines and curves that maybe subtly suggest the ridges of the Melnik sand pyramids or the layers of the sandy soil.
